Where the Water Comes From
A leak is a plumbing puzzle. On a refrigerator, meltwater from the defrost cycle is supposed to drain to a pan and evaporate; when that drain clogs, water backs up and pools inside or runs out the bottom. An ice maker or water dispenser adds a supply line and an inlet valve, either of which can crack or drip. On a dishwasher, water in the base pan triggers a protection mode and points to a door seal, a hose or a pump seal. The job is to trace the water to its actual source rather than mopping the symptom.
Notes by Brand
Sub-Zero: internal pooling is most often a blocked defrost drain; exterior leaks near the water dispenser or ice maker point to the line or inlet valve.
Miele, Bosch and Cove: dishwasher leaks commonly trip a base-pan sensor and protection mode; the source is usually a seal, hose or pump rather than the sensor itself.
Thermador, Viking and Liebherr: refrigeration leaks trace to drains, lines and door seals; we verify the seal closes evenly along its whole length.
Monogram and KitchenAid: dispenser and ice systems add valves and lines that can weep; we pressure-check the supply side.
Symptom, Likely Cause, and Fix
| What You See | Likely Cause | Repair |
|---|---|---|
| Water pooling inside the fridge | Blocked defrost drain | Clear the drain path, verify flow |
| Water under or behind the unit | Cracked line or inlet valve | Replace the line or valve |
| Dishwasher protection mode | Seal, hose or pump leak | Find the source, replace the part, reset |
| Water at the door | Worn or uneven door seal | Replace the gasket |
