The short answer: a Sub-Zero that stops cooling usually has a restricted condenser, a failed fan or a defrost fault, not a dead compressor. Work through those in order and you will find the problem the great majority of the time.
Sub-Zero built-ins use a dual-refrigeration design, with separate sealed systems for the fresh-food and freezer sections. That is why one compartment can drift warm while the other stays cold, and it is the first clue a technician reads. Below are the causes we see most often, roughly in the order we check them.
Start with the Condenser
The condenser sits behind the upper or lower grille depending on the model, and it sheds the heat the system pulls out of the cabinet. When it packs with dust, pet hair and kitchen grease, the unit cannot reject heat, so it runs longer and cools less. On a built-in, this is the single most common reason for warm temperatures and a compressor that never seems to shut off. Cleaning it every six to twelve months prevents a large share of no-cool calls.
Symptom-To-Cause Table
| Symptom | Likely Cause | What the Fix Involves |
|---|---|---|
| Runs constantly, mildly warm | Dirty condenser | Clean condenser, verify airflow and clearance |
| One section warm, other cold | Evaporator fan or defrost fault | Test the fan and defrost circuit, replace the failed part |
| Freezer icing, fresh food warming | Defrost heater or thermostat | Replace defrost component, clear the drain |
| Warm with a hot compressor | Condenser fan or start components | Test fan and start relay, replace as needed |
| Warm, quiet, no cooling at all | Sealed-system or compressor fault | Diagnose refrigerant charge and compressor |
Defrost Faults
If the freezer is icing up and the fresh-food side is creeping warm, the automatic defrost cycle is often the issue. A failed defrost heater, thermostat or control lets frost build on the evaporator until it blocks airflow, and the food warms even though the compressor runs. The fix is to identify and replace the failed defrost component and clear the drain so melt water can escape.
When It Really Is the Sealed System
Sealed-system and compressor faults are real but uncommon. They show up as a unit that runs quietly yet produces no cold at all, sometimes with unusual frost patterns on the tubing. Because these repairs involve refrigerant, they requires confirmation of applicable qualification requirements and specialized recovery equipment. We diagnose the charge and the compressor before recommending this level of work, so you never pay for a major repair the unit does not need.
